The Course
Caring for a client with a tracheostomy can be daunting.
This course provides information about basic anatomy of the respiratory tract and daily management of the tracheostomy.

This course meets the requirements for support workers according to the NDIS Practice Standards 2022
Basic anatomical knowledge of the respiratory system
Skin and stoma care
Indications of need for suctioning and how to perform the procedure
Monitor report abnormal secretions
Support routine tube tie changes
Monitoring and recording requirements
Respond to signs that airways are obstructed; implement emergency procedures deteriorating health or infection
Signs of infection, both in respiratory system and the stoma site
Common complications and action required and understanding when to involve a health practitioner
Clean and maintain suctioning equipment
Equipment types, components and functions
Practical Activities
Attendees will have an opportunity to practice the procedures for suctioning through a tracheostomy tube, changing an inner cannula and routine tracheostomy tie change.
Duration of the course is 3.5 hours
Attendees will receive a certificate on completion of the course.
Certificates are valid for one year
